South Korea And North Korea 'Exhange Fire'

South Korea has ordered the evacuation of residents from an area of its western border after an exchange of fire with North Korea, reports say. North Korea fired a shell at a South Korean military unit on Thursday, prompting the south to retaliate with several artillery rounds, the South's defence ministry said. South Korea's National Security Council is due to hold an emergency session. The western sea border has long been a flashpoint between the two Koreas.

For the fifth straight year, Australia's "Second City" has been crowned the world's most liveable city in a survey published by The Economist. Australia is home to several of the most liveable cities in the world, with Melbourne taking the top spot for the fifth year in a row and Adelaide coming in fifth again on the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) liveability survey of 140 cities. Furthermore, Sydney, though still suffering from the aftermath of the 2014 terror attack in Martin Place, ranked 7th. 80 per cent of vehicles in Nasarawa State have no official number plates– Board

                                                            Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State Alhaji Usman Okposhi, Acting Chairman, Nasarawa State Board of Internal Revenue Service, has said that 80 per cent of vehicles in the state, including motorcycles, have no official number plates. He disclosed this during a meeting with stakeholders in the transport sector in Lafia on Wednesday. Okposhi expressed sadness over the situation and blamed it on high level ignorance and rascality on the part of vehicle and motorcycle owners in the state.

Following the commencement of deactivation of all unregistered and improperly registered SIM cards across telecoms networks, as directed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), irate subscribers whose phone lines have either been barred or deactivated, yesterday stormed the customer care centres of network operators in Lagos. THISDAY noticed an unprecedented crowd at various telecoms centres in Lagos queuing up to re-register their SIMs that had been either barred from making calls or deactivated from the network because they were not properly registered.

25-year-old man nabbed on expressway with N48m

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 25-year-old man, John Okafor, for being in possession of N48m. It was learnt that the suspect was apprehended with the money on the Abaji-Abuja Expressway on Monday by the anti-narcotic officials who were on a routine patrol. He was said to be among the passengers of a commercial bus coming from Onitsha, Anambra State, when he was arrested.

Senate: Anxiety As Mark Appears Before Tribunal

Former Senate President David Mark yesterday appeared before the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, but his lawyers stalled his entry into the witness box for cross-examination. Mark, the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District under the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was dragged before the tribunal by Daniel Onjeh, senatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for alleged election irregularities. Onjeh is praying the tribunal to nullify the emergence of Mark and cancel the entire senatorial election on the grounds that he (Onjeh) polled the highest votes.

(Punch) The All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate inEnugu State in the last election, Okey Ezea , on Tuesday, August 18, declared his counsel at the election petitions tribunal as incompetent. Ezea made the declaration following an argument between him and Ikechukwu Aroh of Chukwuma Oguejiofor Chambers, who claimed to be his new counsel, over two written addresses filed on his behalf. One of the addresses was filed by the petitioner’s former counsel on Aug. 8 while the second was filed by Aroh four days later, even when he had not been admitted by the tribunal.

North Korea creates own time zone to break from 'wicked' Japanese standard

The change will put the standard time in North Korea at GMT+8:30, 30 minutes behind South Korea which, like Japan, is at GMT+9:00. North Korea said the time change, approved on Wednesday by its rubber-stamp parliament, would come into effect from August 15, which this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean peninsula's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.

Islamic State abducts dozens of Christians from Syrian town

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 230 people were kidnapped or detained, including dozens of Christians, some of whom were taken from a church in Qaryatain, the town captured overnight after heavy fighting with the Syrian army. Rami Abdulrahman, the head of the Observatory, said the Christians were "either kidnapped from checkpoints or raids or from churches."

                             The corpse of a 23-year-old lady has been abandoned at a dump in the Olomoore junction in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a chunk of flesh severed from her body. PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim, who was found on Sunday, was identified simply as Sitira, an apprentice hair dresser. She was said to have been preparing for her graduation before the incident happened. Many residents were said to have stormed the Lafenwa Police Division where the corpse was initially taken to by the police. PUNCH Metro gathered that late Sitira’s corpse was allegedly thrown off a moving vehicle at the Olomoore dump on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

                   On Saturday, February 16, 2013, Henry Chibueze, a notorious kidnapper terrorizing South East and South South parts of the country, stormed the home of his girlfriend, Sandra Ijedinma, at Igando area of Lagos State, with an AK47 assault rifle and opened fire on everyone present in the apartment, killing his girlfriend, her elder sister Praise Ozor, and her two children. Not satisfied, Henry proceeded to a nearby street where one of Sandra’s elder sisters resided and killed the woman and three of her children, before fleeing. His anger was said to have been that Sandra, who was an optician with Madonna University, had called off their relationship, when she learnt that he was a kidnapper. Sandra’s twin sister, Katherine who sustained a bullet would during the attack had told vanguard in 2013 that the assailant was familiar with everyone in their family but nobody knew he was a kidnapper .
