Grandmother Tortures Grandchild With Hot Pot Over Plate Of Rice
The incident occurred at Baba Olodo House at Ijeun-Tuntun/ Olorombo community in Abeokuta. It was learnt that the girl is now on admission at the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. Adebayo, now in police custody, returned from a party with cooked rice served at the ceremony and kept it in the kitchen.
However, the hungry granddaughter was said to have later eaten a portion of the food which eventually infuriated the suspect. According to a witness, the grandmother first beat the victim mercilessly before using the hot pot to inflict injuries on her body.
The witness said the incident forced neighbours and other residents to alert the police and officials of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. The suspect was promptly arrested and taken to the Ibara Police Station, Abeokuta, where arrangements were being made to transfer the case to the Anti- Human Trafficking Department.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation.
It was gathered that the Special Adviser to the governor on Women Affairs and Social Development, Adenike Osoba, and a Senior Social Welfare Officer, Mrs. Wonuola Kassim, stormed the police station to monitor the case with a view to pursuing it to a logical conclusion. Osoba told journalists that the action of the suspect was crude and inhuman. According to her, the law will take its course on the matter.
She said: “The authority will not fold its arms and condone such illegality or allow anybody to maltreat children or any other person. The victim will also be taken to the ministry’s custody after proper medication.”
