UK police officer sacked over Ibori corruption case

THE NATION A police officer has been removed from a UK anti-corruption unit after claims he was paid for information about a case against jailed former Delta State governor, James Ibori. Ibori is in prison for fraud and money-laundering linked to his time as governor. The Crown Prosecution Service said it had intelligence which “supports the assertion” a Met officer was paid for information. He denied wrongdoing. The CPS previously denied claims it had not handed over all key evidence. Ibori was jailed in 2012 for 13 years for laundering millions in the UK through the purchase of property, a fleet of armoured Range Rovers and a £120,000 Bentley.

London summit okays return of looted cash to Nigeria, others

Yesterday’s anti-corruption summit in London agreed to a plan to speed up international efforts on asset recovery. The Global Forum for Asset Recovery will bring together governments and law enforcement agencies to discuss returning assets to Nigeria, Ukraine, Sri Lanka and Tunisia.    'Barbaric' foster mum, Kandyce Downer, 35, from Birmingham, was jailed for life today for the murder of 18-month-old Keegan Downer, who died at the family home on September 5 last year just months after Downer became her legal guardian. Little Keegan had been repeatedly beaten and suffered more than 200 injuries, including seven broken ribs, broken legs and severe head and spine injuries. N2.5b ‘fraud’: Udenwa, Fani-Kayode in trouble

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detectives yesterday arrested former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa over the disbursement of a huge sum of money during the 2015 presidential election. Of the N4billion withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), N2.5 billion was paid into the accounts of six chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Udenwa, and the Goodluck Support Group (GSG).

The Army confirmed yesterday the arrest of suspected killers of Civil War hero Gen. Mohammed Shuwa (rtd). The first General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, which he also commanded during the war, was shot dead in Maiduguri on November 2, 2012. Acting Director of Army Public Relations Col. Sani Usman yesterday said officials of the Military Intelligence arrested the suspects after tracking them down in Kano. They were being followed from Maiduguri. Parading the suspects at the Brigade Headquarters in Kano, Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Hamisu Hassan said their arrest followed sustained intelligence operation.

Military Vows to Deal with Killer Herdsmen Like Boko Haram

The Nigerian military has vowed to deal decisively with marauding herdsmen that have been terrorising people and killing in different parts of the country, the same way it is dealing with the Boko Haram insurgency, Niger Delta militancy and other acts of criminality. The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, gave the assurance yesterday in response to THISDAY enquiries into the gruesome murder of over 40 farmers of Ukpabi Nimbo Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State by the suspected Fulani herdsmen.
